Apple has changed the Crimea map to meet Russian demands

After some debate Apple has eventually complied with the demands of Russia, showing the annexed Crimean peninsula as a Russian territory on some of its maps.

In 2014 Russian forces annexed Crimea from the Ukraine, which drew much international condemnation.

The predominantly Russian speaking area now displays as Russian within Apple Maps and the weather app when viewed in Russia.

However, when viewed in other nations this is not true.

The peninsula is no longer shown as a separate entity to Russia.

“Crimea and Sevastopol now appear on Apple devices as Russian territory.”, said the Russian parliament’s lower house.

The naval port city of Sevastopol is treated by Russia as a separate region.

Apple initially put forward to have Crimea shown as undefined territory, However Vasily Piskaryov, chairman of the Duma security and anti-corruption committee, stated Apple complied with the Russian constitution.

Mr Piskaryov explained that Apple representatives were made aware that labelling Crimea as a part of the Ukraine was a crime under Russian law and would be treated as such.

“There is no going back,” Mr Piskaryov said. “Today, with Apple, the situation is closed – we have received everything we wanted.”

Apple have yet to disclose a statement in regard to the changes made within the applications.

On the other hand Google has not acknowledged Crimea as belonging to either Russia or Ukraine.

Despite this, the spelling used is Russian rather than Ukrainian when naming areas.

The international community, or most of it, does not recognise the annexation of Crimea.
