Apple may finally be folding phones after reportedly testing an E-ink as the screen for a foldable device.
Analyst Ming-Chi-Kuo tweeted, “The color EPD [Electronic Paper Display] has the potential to become a mainstream solution for foldable devices’ must-have cover/second screen thanks to its excellent power-saving, in tablet-like applications.”
On the market these days almost all fablets pair a larger folding display with a smaller external display to quickly check notifications and perform simple tasks, like making a phone call.
Apple may reduce the power consumption of this outer display by using an E-ink solution, however that will impact the capabilities.
The screen will become less responsive and likely will be restricted by the pallet of colours available.
E-ink is most commonly referred to as th solution used for Amazon Kindle devices, however they do also have the capability of expanding the colour pallet above just grey and white.
However, despite being capable of producing colour images, it still will not be as good as a smart phone screen in available colours or refresh rates.
The foldable device is likely years away still, however it’s good to know it will be coming in the future.
