From Monday all new electric vehicles will need to feature sounds when travelling less than 12mph under new EU initiative AVAS.
Concerns have been raised in that past the electric cars are to quiet, which put pedestrians at risk. But now all electric 4 wheel vehicles must be fitted with a device to male it sound like an actual engine.
The sound it to be emitted when a vehicle is reversing or travelling less than 12 miles per hour. This is when cars are most likely to be near pedestrians said the EU. Part of the reasoning that this new initiative is being brought into effect is due to the charity Guide Dogs, however their request was for a noise at all speeds.
Michael Ellis the Roads minister stated that the government wanted “the benefits of green transport to be felt by everyone. This new requirement will give pedestrians added confidence when crossing the road,”
