Enter the Stadia – Google gets on Gaming

Google are getting into the gaming arena in a big way with 4K gaming streamed to your monitor of choice.

“The Stadia Founder’s Edition lets you instantly enjoy games in up to 4K on your TV without a console. You can also play across laptops, desktops, Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a2 with cross-screen early access from day one.”

“Play Stadia in November with the Founder’s Edition. Get access to Stadia at launch. Enjoy three months of Stadia Pro for yourself without charge and give away your Buddy Pass to invite a friend. Combine Chromecast Ultra with the exclusive Night Blue Stadia Controller to play in up to 4K on your TV, and also play games on Stadia across all supported devices in early access.”

With the rise in gaming streaming services, Xbox game pass, EA Access etc; It’s clear the furture of gaming is changing, moving away from physical ownership in the way Netflix and Spotify have replaced CDs and DVDs.

Will the next thing to go be the console itself?

Google are counting on it. Hoping to lead the charge with the Stadia.

With E3 announcing the next generation Xbox console (due Winter 2020) it looks like physical consoles are far from a dead format. They are however also talking about stream gaming from their own Microsoft servers, so this idea isn’t unique to Google and clearly has promise.

Google may well be about to take a slice of the gaming market. While other similar products have tried to make a dent in this market before, but none with as trusted a name as Google.

The Stadia just requires the controller and a PC, or Google Chrome cast to play direct on your TV. With the Pro subscription at £8.99 a month, or free for base product.

The Pro giving higher spec graphics and free games each month. Both packages allowing you to buy games right from the game store. And ready to stream right away.

So this could be the perfect format for the more casual of gamer. People who travel around a lot (just pack the controller). Or anyone wanting to play the latest games without the upfront expense of buying a console.

The minimum internet speeds required is 10mb/s. Which for most in the UK is no problem. However, this might cause problems for those in countries with slower speeds, or those living in the sticks. This is also just the minimum spec, not recommended.

There’s also the problem of being unable to play if you’re having any troubles with your router. Which if you’re experience is anything like mine, will certainly put you off.

More good news, the Stadia will be a fraction of the cost of its competition when launched in November, the starter pack will cost just £119.

This package will include the controller and a Chromecast Ultra TV stick, alongside a 3 month subscription to the Stadia Pro.
