WhatsApp will now allow you to message your friends and family even if your internet is blocked or disrupted using proxy servers.
WhatsApp has said that the reason it is looking to introduce such measures is to ensure that the recent blackouts that occurred in Iran will not disrupt users in the future.
The issue in many countries is that the Government themselves can choose to block certain services.
But, this can cause a knock on effect to everyday life, when you are unable to discuss urgent issues with friends or family.
WhatsApp is looking for worldwide communities to offer their proxies in order to allow open and free communication to all.
In a block they have said, “Connecting via proxy maintains the same high level of privacy and security that WhatsApp provides.”
“Your personal messages will still be protected by end-to-end encryption – ensuring they stay between you and the person you’re communicating with and are not visible to anyone in between, not the proxy servers, WhatsApp or Meta.”
Government restrictions on the internet are not a new thing neither are they not commonplace, but when countries use them to hinder the populaces access to communicating with one another there are problems.
One of the largest issues you may have heard about in regard to countries restricting internet usage is within Eastern Asia recently where entire sites were restricted by government mandate.
