Ford has announced they are releasing a new all electric pickup truck, the Ford F-150 Lightening, but it won’t be on sale till 2022.
The new electric pickup truck has been all over the news prior to today’s announcement due to the momentous change it represents to the industry.
Ford will debut the new vehicle on May the 19th at an event held in Michigan, this event will also be live streamed.
The Ford F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle in the US for more than 40 years, and has more recently been introduced to the United Kingdom.
Ford is treating the event as a major unveiling, understandably so given the few events that have been completed over the past 12 months.
Ford are also having 18 other events across the United States during the unveiling of the new Ford, these will all be in person, unlike many other countries around the world.
Ford has recently spent $700 million on a new manufacturing plant in Michigan this is where they are planning the production of the new Ford F-150 lightning.
A couple of details have slipped so far regarding the new EV including dual motor configurations, mobile power generation, hands free driver assistance and like other recent Ford cars have shown it will have wireless software updates.
Ford has already developed a hybrid version of the F-150, however this only can manage 27 miles per gallon.
As with all trucks or pickups they are big vehicles and require a lot of fuel this may explain while they are not so common in the United Kingdom compared to the US.
Another reason for the electric powertrain is the UK restriction on vehicles being powered buy petrol or diesel or any other combustible gas by the year 2030.
Ford has said they are looking to spend over $22 billion in order to produce over a dozen electrified vehicles by 2025.
The Mustang Mach E has already hit the shelves, and more recently the Mustang Mach E GT has been announced, with a greater distance available then the competing Tesla.
