Google smarten up security on Play Store apps

Google smarten up security on apps uploaded to the play store, to ensure malicious content is barred.

Any apps which are to be introduced to the play store from this point on will be scanned by 3 external cyber security companies, in addition to Google’s own team to avoid malware intrusion.

Google have admitted that the tide has changed and the vast number of apps trying to join their play store has overcome them and for this reason the are looking for external assistance.

The aptly named App Defense Alliance will be built using security companies Zimperium, Eset and Lookout.

This will therefore allow all apps to be put under more scrutiny, before passing to the end user through the Android Play Store.

Using databases built from known malware, behavioral clues and machine learning models of threats the scanners will be able to scrutinize the applications for Trojan adware, ransomware, banking malware and phishing attacks among others.

“On the malware side, we haven’t really had a way to scale as much as we’ve wanted to scale,” Dave Kleidermacher, Google’s vice-president of Android security, told Wired magazine.

Mr Kleidermacher added there were so many apps being developed, even making a “1% incremental improvement” could make a difference.

This is just one of numerous weapons Google are adding to their holster to fend off nasty bugs trying to bite android users. Including the new bar on apps which continue to charge users after being deleted.
