The brand of iTunes is coming to an end, to be replaced by Apple Music, Apple Podcasts and Apple TV.
Speculation started several months ago that Apple would be bring the brand of iTunes to an end after its 18 year roller-coaster of a history.
From the forced install of the U2 album in 2014 and competition from the massive wave of streaming services that have hit the market.
It has been one of the most influential apps in revolutionising the ways which we consume music around the globe.
Fulfilling a need for digital music over physical formats, without having to download a thousand viruses just to hear Shaggy’s ‘It wasn’t me’. (looking at you limewire)
iTunes was originally released in 2001 and was a great concept at the time, but that was when we did not have internet capable iPods or streaming devices.
Through it’s necessity to use iTunes to transfer songs to your iPod and sleek modern (for the time) look, it became the standard media player on most users of PC, and all of Mac users of course. Ousting settled programs such as VLC and Windows Media Player.
The question is now, for those still storing digital songs on their harddrives, how will we now transfer these to our iProducts?
Well iTunes will remain unchanged on Windows platforms, and downloads will still be available in a sidebar on the Apple Music app for Macs.
So is this a signal of the end of Apple dominance?
Well no, Apple will reportedly now become an all-around entertainment services provider and not just a hardware/software tech company.
Already apple are making moves into new untapped areas in form of the Apple Card to take over banking; and a new streaming service to rival Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
The end of an era maybe, and what an era it has been, but all signs suggest this is just the beginning for Apple’s aspirations.
