Reduce, repair recycle

We know full well we need to save our planet, and in order to do that there are some thing you can do around the house, such as, reduce, repair, recycle.

Repair initiatives are a growing interest on social media, with influencers sharing blogs and videos of how they have repaired gadgets for viewers to learn and be influenced to do the same.

We know already that the electronic waste generated by humanity is a huge concern, however do we have enough chutzpah to do something about it.

50 Million Tonnes

That is the volume of electrical waste that is generated each and every year, with that figure likely to more than double by 2050, in a report written by the UN.

As we know there has recently been movement by the European Parliament alreadyto reduce wasted chargers for gadgets, but is this really enough?

A Dr Ruediger Kuehr, of the United Nations University, who worked on the UN’s Global E-Waste Monitor, said that despite having set collection targets, “world-wide collections are stagnating or even decreasing”.

The UN have announced they plan to release the Global E-Waste Monitor in April, however only 41 countries submitted their findings.

Therefore, the majority of e-waste is simply unknown. However, this is only part of a larger issue, the toxins released from the mining and manufacturing of gadgets also contributes masses.

There are rare and limited elements used in a lot of gadgets, which are both hazardous to extract and that are soon running out.

Some of the largest contributors to to the e-waste are irons, vacuum cleaners, washing machines and fridges, however with the cheapness and usability of internet connected gadgets, they are expected to become one of the larger contributors in the next few years.

One thing you may not be aware of is that retailers of these electronic gadgets are required to provide you with disposal of an old device if they are selling a newer version of the product.

From 2021 retailers will also be required to ensure appliances are longer-lasting, and spare parts will have to be supplied for a minimum of 10 years.

This ruling came in October of 2019 and ties in almost perfectly with the announcement that Apple announced they are still slowing down old iPhones.
